Birthday Party For Kaslo PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday, August 14 come and celebrate Kaslo’s anniversary at the Kemball Memorial Centre Garden. Kaslo was incorporated as a city on this date in 1893, and George McCuaig has written a song that tells the story of this tumultuous time. It’s hard to imagine the contagious explosion of pride, energy and sheer hard work that motivated the men and women of 117 years ago to declare a city in such a remote wilderness – but it is fodder for some amazing tales with a touch of the ridiculous and magnificent. Hear the world premiere of this song after the cutting of the birthday cake this Saturday afternoon. You’ll know it’s cake cutting time when you hear the Village Hall bells ring.

If you have a heritage style outfit, this is your chance to pull it out of the trunk and party like it’s 1899! There will be punch to drink, BBQ by donation, a big salad (bring something from your garden to add to it) as well as a really big cake. Young and old are invited to take the microphone and share their memories whenever the urge comes upon them. If you have something written down and are shy to speak, pass your story to someone who isn’t.

The party takes place between 1 pm and 4 pm, Saturday, August 14. All donations will help to fund Kaslo’s Communities in Bloom program.

The Natural World - Langham Gallery Opening PDF Print E-mail

The Langham Cultural Centre is proud to present the works of Boundary artist, Tajai Alexev in theMain Gallery and local artist, Shelley Ross in the Community Gallery on Friday, July 23rd. A reception will be held between 7 - 9 pm with artist talks to begin at 7:30.

With his exhibition, "Essence", Tajai Alexev explores the states of imperfection and temporality by painting macroscopic tropical leaves in a decaying state. Some of the background treatment includes "infinite" repeat designs reminiscent of Muhgal miniatures or temple carvings of SE Asia.

The recipient of a reward for the study and research of natural dyes and surface textiles, Tajai uses a paste resist technique to bring empahisis to these states. He says, that in his exploration of textile practices, "The pieces that held the most relevance were the ones exposed to the elements in one or a number of ways and for days at a time." These works conjure up 'memories' of the Old World - suggestive of trading cloths, maps forgotten in tombs and parchment.

Shelley Ross' exhibition of watercolour paintings, "Lichens of the Kootenay Valley: Lovely, Luscious and Likeable" is the result of a year's exploration of the lichens that grow in this region. Although her academic background is in biology, in nature, she sees colour, form and patterns before species identification and classification.

Shelley is a self-proclaimed messenger for an under-appreciated life form. Her watercolours bring light to the unusual, intricate forms and beautiful colours provided by these organisms. Her work invites/urges us, as viewers to carry the intrigue of her exhibition to the out of doors - to our great forests, where one can appreciate the myriad of lichens growing there first-hand.
